The Dutch educational institute SURFnet promotes innovation in Higher Education and started to promote the use of
OpenSim in education in 2009. Around 15 educational institutes all
gathered for the first meeting and after a year or so the EDUsim-NL community was founded. The Dutch community for virtual education.
This community has its goals:- Promoting OpenSim for education in the Netherlands
- Organising Free seminars
- Training at schools for teachers and students
- EDUgrid NL - central grid for all educators in the Netherlands, share content, in-world meetings
- EDUwiki website - installing and working with OpenSim from scratch.

In het kader van het SURFnet/Kennisnet 'Innovatieprogramma' is SURFnet in 2009 van start gegaan met een nieuw pilotproject op het gebied van virtuele werelden. Samen met een aantal bij SURFnet aangesloten instellingen is er een experimentele virtuele wereld ontwikkeld op basis van OpenSim technologie. Centraal staat de samenwerking tussen diverse onderwijsinstellingen en het experimenteren met deze 3D webtechnologie. Deze samenwerking heeft de naam EDUsim-NL gekregen waarin deelnemen: De Digitale School, Fontys Pedagogische Technische Hogeschool, Game-On, 3DLES, Hogeschool Utrecht, Universiteit van Tilburg, TNO Bouw en Ondergrond.
